Safety info for West Coast:

General: More caution needed but manageable.
Watch Out: Avoid residential areas at night.
Scams: Hidden charges on bills.

Stay smart, stay safe.

How long did it take to feel comfortable and find the good spots?

This is outdated info IMO. Things have changed since the pandemic. Current prices are actually lower than what's described here.

Quick question — how was the hotel security?

Good info. I'd add that going during the week is much better — less crowded, better prices.

With respect, my experience was more mixed. But maybe I went at the wrong time.

I was there in February and prices were great value.

Spent about $56/day all-in. Quality was above average.

My tip: go early evening for best selection.

I'd also recommend downloading Google Translate before you go. Essential.

Adding my experience from last month.

The scene has improved since pre-COVID. Biggest change: more online activity.
