Chapter 03
Types of Services Explained
Understanding the different models so you know what you're walking into.
The sex industry is not monolithic. Different service models offer different experiences, pricing structures, levels of safety, and legal implications. Knowing the differences helps you make informed choices.
Brothels & Licensed Venues
A brothel is a dedicated establishment where multiple providers work on-site. In countries where sex work is legal, these are often the safest and most transparent option.
FKK Clubs (Germany, Austria)
FKK stands for Freikörperkultur (free body culture). These are large-format clubs, often resembling spas, where clients pay an entry fee (typically €50–€100) that includes food, drinks, sauna access, and social areas. Services with individual providers are negotiated and paid separately (typically €50 for 30 minutes standard service, with extras at additional cost).
- Pros: Safe, clean, regulated, transparent pricing, relaxed atmosphere, no pressure, multiple providers to choose from
- Cons: Can feel impersonal, entry fee regardless of whether you engage, busy on weekends
- Notable examples: FKK clubs are found throughout Germany, with major concentrations near Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Cologne
Laufhaus / Eros Centers
Multi-story buildings where individual providers rent rooms and operate independently. You walk the hallways, providers stand at their doorways, and you negotiate directly. Common in Germany and Austria.
- Pros: No entry fee, direct negotiation, wide selection, providers set their own terms
- Cons: Can feel transactional, quality varies by building, less social atmosphere
Window Prostitution
Providers sit in glass-fronted rooms at street level, most famously in Amsterdam's De Wallen. You walk past, make eye contact, and if interested, knock on the door to discuss terms.
- Pros: Transparent, easy to browse, regulated areas tend to be safe
- Cons: Brief sessions (15–20 minutes standard), can feel rushed, tourist crowd can make it awkward
Termas (Brazil)
Brazilian-style bathhouses that combine sauna/spa facilities with available providers. Entry fee typically includes drinks and access. Providers are independent and negotiate directly.
Independent Escorts
Independent providers operate on their own — they manage their own advertising, screening, scheduling, and sessions. This is the most common model worldwide.
How It Works
Providers advertise on websites, social media, or dedicated platforms. You contact them (usually by text, email, or through a booking form), go through their screening process, and arrange a session — either incall (at their location) or outcall (at your location, usually a hotel).
- Incall: You visit the provider's space. Generally cheaper, provider controls the environment (which can be safer for both parties). You'll typically receive an address shortly before the appointment.
- Outcall: Provider comes to you (hotel room, residence). Usually costs more. You have home-field advantage but the provider takes on more risk, so expect more extensive screening.
Pricing
Rates vary enormously by location, experience, and demand. As a very rough global range:
- Budget range: $50–$150/hour (Southeast Asia, parts of Latin America, Eastern Europe)
- Mid range: $150–$400/hour (Western Europe, Australia, mid-tier U.S. cities)
- High end: $400–$1,500+/hour (major U.S. cities, high-end European providers, luxury companions)
These are rough benchmarks. Don't anchor to them — research the local market.
Agencies
Agencies manage a roster of providers and handle booking, screening, and logistics. You contact the agency rather than the provider directly.
- Pros: Convenience, some quality assurance, easier booking process, agency handles scheduling conflicts
- Cons: Higher prices (agency takes a cut), less personal connection with the provider, provider may not match photos exactly, less flexibility on services
Quality varies drastically between agencies. Research reputations carefully. In some markets, "agency" is a loose term for a dispatcher running operations of questionable legitimacy.
Massage Parlors
Establishments offering massages with sexual services. These range from legitimate-looking spas that offer "happy endings" to venues that are essentially brothels marketed as massage parlors.
Asian Massage Parlors (AMPs)
Common in North America and worldwide. Typically offer massage services with the possibility of sexual extras. Operate in a legal gray area almost everywhere.
Trafficking risk: AMPs, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, have a higher association with trafficking and exploitative working conditions than other segments of the industry. Be vigilant for signs described in Chapter 5. If a provider seems scared, controlled, or unable to leave, do not proceed and report to authorities.
Soaplands (Japan)
Unique to Japan. The client is bathed and massaged by a provider using their body. Technically avoids the legal prohibition on vaginal intercourse for money, though the reality can vary. Located in designated entertainment districts.
Street-Based Sex Work
Providers soliciting in public — street corners, known districts, red-light areas. This is the highest-risk segment for both clients and providers.
- Safety risks: Higher rates of robbery, assault, drug-related issues, and law enforcement stings
- Health risks: Generally less access to health services and testing
- Legal risks: Street solicitation is criminalized in most jurisdictions, even where indoor sex work is tolerated
- Exploitation risks: Higher rates of trafficking and pimp-controlled situations
Recommendation: Avoid street-based sex work. The risk profile is significantly worse than every other option on this list.
Online & Digital Services
The industry has increasingly moved online. While not the primary focus of this guide, be aware of:
- Cam sites and content platforms: Legal in most jurisdictions. No physical contact involved.
- Sugar dating platforms: Occupy a legal gray area. Marketed as relationships with financial support rather than direct payment for sex. The legal distinction is murky and varies by jurisdiction.
- Sexting and phone services: Generally legal where both parties are adults.
Specialized Services
Duo Sessions
A duo session involves two providers and one client. This is typically booked through providers who regularly work together as a pair. Pricing is usually 1.5x to 2x the single-provider rate (not double, since they share the time). Book through one provider and let them coordinate with their partner. Chemistry between the duo providers matters enormously — ask if they work together regularly.
FBSM (Full Body Sensual Massage)
Full Body Sensual Massage is a massage-focused service with sensual or sexual elements. It typically includes a full-body massage followed by a "happy ending" (manual release), but generally does not include full intercourse. FBSM providers often work from massage tables rather than beds and emphasize the therapeutic/sensual aspect. Pricing is usually lower than full-service escorts. Popular in North America where it occupies a legal gray area.
BDSM & Professional Domination
Professional dominatrices (pro-dommes) offer BDSM sessions that may or may not include sexual elements. This is a specialized field with its own etiquette, negotiation process, and safety protocols. Sessions require detailed pre-negotiation of limits, safe words, and activities. See our Niche Services Guide for comprehensive coverage.
Tantric & Sensual Bodywork
Tantric practitioners offer sessions focused on energy, breathing, and mindful sensuality rather than goal-oriented sexual activity. Quality varies enormously — from genuinely trained practitioners to those using "tantric" as a marketing term. See our Niche Services Guide for guidance on distinguishing legitimate tantric from marketing.
Social Companionship
Some providers offer non-sexual companionship — dinner dates, event attendance, travel companions, or simply conversation and company. These bookings are priced by time like any other session. They're legitimate services sought by people who want company without sexual expectations. Be clear in your booking that this is what you want, and don't expect it to "turn into something more" unless the provider offers that.
Choosing the Right Model
Your choice depends on several factors:
- Legal environment: In regulated markets, use the regulated options. That's what they're there for.
- Budget: Brothels and parlors tend to be cheaper per session. Independents offer a wider range. Agencies tend to be most expensive.
- Experience level: Brothels can be easier for first-timers (less planning, safer environment, can leave if uncomfortable). Independents require more research and communication skills.
- Privacy: Incall with an independent offers good privacy. Outcall means nobody sees you enter a venue. Brothels and clubs are more visible.
- Connection: If the interpersonal experience matters to you, independents generally offer the most personal encounters. Brothels can feel more transactional.
Bottom line: There is no universally "best" option. The best choice is the one that fits the legal framework, your budget, your risk tolerance, and your priorities.
